Umutara Province is a region in the north west of Rwanda, which borders Uganda. It is located in the foothills of the mountains that form the Uganda border and is at a relatively low elevation. As such it receives a relatively low rainfall when compared to the rest of Rwanda and is one of the least populated provincial areas in the country.
Following the 1996 genocide Rwandan refugees who had fled to across the border into Uganda returned to the Umutara area and settled. The primary source of livelihood in Umutara is agriculture, however the relatively low rainfall makes it difficult for farmers to produce large crops. One 5 households in Umutara is more than an hour away from its primary water source. Because of the low rainfall and relative isolation of the district many Umutara residents live in poverty with childhood malnutrition and limited access to education two of the main issues facing families living in the region.
In 2005 Day 4 funded the purchase of a parcel of land partially funded the building of a church/community centre in a village located very close to the Uganda border. The land is being used for cropping of peanuts, beans, sweet potato and maize, which, when harvested provides a meagre income for locals and for the further development and maintenance of buildings on the site.
Our recipient partners in the region have established 3 such projects, with one of them now providing a nursery school for local children. It is the goal of our partners to develop buildings and micro-business intiatives in a number of villages, making it possible for more children to receive a basic education and providing employement and income generating opportunities for adults.
This project is an initiative developed by members of the same African community it seeks to serve, and highlights Day 4's commitment to our mission and vision.
