Day 4's recipient partners in Rwanda, the Christian Unity Fellowship, operate more than 55 self help groups in village communities on the outskirts of Kigali.

The groups are comprised of men and women from different ethnic backgrounds (Hutu and Tutsi) and are based around the principals of micro-economics.  Each group grows until it has 20 members and then a new group is started.

In the group members are expected to bring savings to deposit into the groups bank account each week.  These savings are then used cooperatively by the group members to start or support communal business initiatives, and to fund low interest loans for things such as house repairs, health related costs or school fees.

Day 4 has committed to helping self help groups with capital investment for sustainable micro-business initiatives.  Funding for these initiatives works on a sliding scale, where self-help group members will be required to raise a percentage of the total capital requirement for each project before Day 4 provides the remainder.  Each self-help group can access grants from Day 4 a maximum of 3 times with the final grant allocation not exceeding 50% of the total capital investment required for the project.

These self-help groups represent an inspiring example of Rwandan people making poverty history in their own communities.

The groups are managed by two volunteer workers from the Christian Unity Fellowship who spend their afternoons training group members in budgeting, running meetings, health and hygiene, and business related skills.

This project is an initiative developed by members of the same African community it seeks to serve, and highlights Day 4's commitment to our mission and vision.
